Don’t Miss the October 5th Deadline — Here’s What It Really Means

If you’ve started selling on eBay, Vinted or Etsy this year and earned over £1,000, there’s an important date you need to know:October 5th.

That’s the deadline to register for Self Assessment with HMRC.

What the October 5th Deadline Is For

Every year, if you’ve earned more than £1,000 in trading income (not profit) between 6 April and 5 April, HMRC expects you to tell them.

You do that by registering for Self Assessment — basically creating your online tax account so you can file your return later.

Don't Worry!

If you don’t register by October 5th, you can still file later, but you risk penalties or delays, so just do it as soon as possibel.

Example

  • You started selling on eBay in June 2024.

  • You made around £1,400 in sales (after fees).

  • That’s above the £1,000 trading allowance, so you need to register.

  • Your registration deadline is October 5th, 2025 (for the 2024/25 tax year).

Once you’re registered, you’ll file your return by 31 January 2026.

Why HMRC Uses The Octover 5th Deadline

HMRC needs time to issue your online tax account and log-in credentials.By registering early, you give them time to set it up before the January rush — and avoid the dreaded “can’t access my account” stress.

What to Do Now

If you think you might be over £1,000, it’s easy to register:

2️⃣ Fill in your details

3️⃣ Wait for your activation code (usually 10–14 days)

Once that’s done, you’re all set to file your tax return when the time comes.
